Genre Research: Comedy and Horror
Comedy
- Common camera angles in comedies: (CAMS)
-The Push (way to far) in/out
-The Wait for it...
-The Comparison
-The Camera bump
-The Perspective shot
- Common Mis-En-Scene in comedies: (CLAMPS)
The soundtrack is more upbeat and positive as opposed to the sinister tracks that are used more often in action films or thrillers. The lighting in comedy films are brighter as to reflect the mood and tone of the film; the brighter, the happier. The make-up in comedies is generally bright and happy. Costume designs can vary but usually the colors are more vibrant and lighter.
- Common Editing in comedies:
Comedy comes down to rhythm, according to Walter Murch. An editor must look at a scene, find the source of humor, and then assess what is the best visual technique to communicate it. If done correctly, you are that much closer to earning a round of laughter from your audience.
- Common sound in comedies:
One of the basic principles of comedy is the element of surprise. Not necessarily in a "villain jumps out from behind the bushes" kind of way, but more often in an "I did not see that coming" way. By adding sounds that wouldn't normally fit where they are, it adds a fun element.
- Example films of comedies:
-Toy Story
-Dumb and Dumber
-Ace Ventura
-Deadpool
- What elements of comedies do you like?
I like comedies simply because I can get a good laugh out of them. Whether I'm watching one alone or with friends, I always enjoy them. I especially like ones where the actors are just being stupid, it makes it funnier.
- What elements of comedies do not appeal to you?
I don't like when they get too serious or when they say there a comedy but the actual movie isn't actually that funny.
Horror
- Common camera angles in Horror:
-Hand held camera shot
-Tilted Angle
-Low Angle
-Close-up
-Reverse
- Common Mis-En-Scene in Horror:
Commonly, all of the gory parts of Horror films are set at night in the dark. Shadows and secretive humanly shapes create fear among the audience because they are unable to match an identity to the person. Shadows would be created through low- key lighting to add the effect of uncertainty of the attacker.
- Common Editing in Horror:
Suspense is built on the audience’s anticipation. A video editor can use the timing and pace of clips to build this anticipation and grow suspense. There is no set formula for building suspense through timing and pacing but there are some basic guidelines that serve as a solid foundation.
- Common sound in Horror:
Horror films usually have suspenseful music. This music starts low and can grow into a whole ensemble throughout a scene in order to bring attention that somethings about to happen.
- Example films of Horror:
-It
-Saw
-47 meters deep
-Ma
-Get out
- What elements of horror do you like?
I like the suspense and getting scared by them. Its an intense feeling that can be fun to experience. I also think most horror movies have cool storylines and plots.
- What elements of horror do not appeal to you?
I don't like when they drag out the suspense too long and they never complete it.
